Capture a quick glimpse of the Isle of Pines on this unguided bus tour, stopping to visit some of the most important and picturesque historical sites. Drive past the spectacular white sanded Kuto Beach en route to the old convict ruins that once imprisoned French and Arab convicts. On your way to Vao Village enjoy a brief stop at the Brush Island lookout to see this peculiarly shaped isle, decorated with the endemic Araucaria Columnaris Pine.
Driving through Vao, you will see the town hall, post office and small clinic before arriving at Saint Maurice Bay for a quick photo stop. Here you will see the traditional “kanak” wood carvings placed around a religious memorial that celebrates the arrival of the first Marist Brothers to the Isle of Pines in 1848. Following this you’ll discover the Notre Dame de l’Assomption, Catholic Church (1861) in the heart of the village. Vao Village was established at the same time the Church was founded to bring the tribes and families together so that all could receive the teachings of the mission. After soaking up the history of the village you’ll enjoy a relaxing ride back to the ship.
