To kick off the excursion, you'll leave the pier for Funchal's Botanical Gardens, one of the best examples of Madeiran-landscaped gardens and located on the eastern border of Funchal. Situated on the grounds of a once private house, the Botanical Gardens have an abundance of plants and flowers from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island's temperate climate. In the Botantical Gardens, there's also an herbarium, terraces and greenhouses, holding many rare and indigenous plants all labeled in Portuguese and Latin. Be sure to take advantage of the many photographic views of the area from the gardens for lasting memories. After visiting the Gardens, you'll take a 9-minute cable car ride in the sky above the Valley of João Gomes River to the viewpoint at Barbosas Square in the parish of Monte. Along the way, enjoy the scenic and panoramic views! The parish of Monte, perched on a hill above Funchal, is known for its many fine properties and gardens. The town’s 18th-century twin-towered church is a city landmark. In the center of the high altar of the church, stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte (circa 15th century) which is credited as being the source of many miracles. Inside the church you'll also find the tomb of Charles I, the last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. After your visit to Monte, you'll embark on an exciting toboggan ride back to the village of Livramento in Funchal. As you ride down the hill in the toboggan's wicker sledges, you'll get a taste of the Madeiran culture of past decades when this activity was an established form of transport. After your thrilling ride, you will head back to the port.

NOTES

  • Not recommended for pregnant ladies and guests that suffer from vertigo or have back problems.
  • A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a micro-climate and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Visibility from all scenic outlooks is dependent upon the weather and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
  • The Toboggan is a popular tourist attraction and there may be queues before boarding.
