Ålesund, the largest town on Norway's Northwest coast, was built on several islands stretching out into the ocean. This excursion starts with a sightseeing tour of the city of Ålesund and fjord by boat and its surrounding archipelago, as well as takes you on a walking tour of the prettiest port in Norway. Departing from the city harbor, your guide will introduce you to the nearby areas of Ålesund with its fjords, skerries, and mountains. After you enjoy this relaxing, informative boat trip, you will take a guided walk of the Ålesund, learning about the history of the city. Ålesund was rebuilt in the German-style architecture of the time period — Art Nouveau, or "Jugendstil" — shortly after a fire in 1904. In fact, it was the German Emperor, Wilhelm II, an allied friend of Norway, who sent masons up to help rebuild the town. The town center is relatively small and easy to cover on foot. You will be shown various examples of the unique Jugendstil which has made Ålesund famous as one of the three last "Jugendstil  cities" in Europe. You will then continue on the last part of your tour uphill to a small yet attractive park and viewpoint at the foot of Mount Aksla. Here you will find exotic trees and plants, as well as a memorial stone dedicated to the Emperor Wilhelm II, who also has the main street in town named after him. Here you will also see the statue of the Viking "Gaange Rolf" (named after the Norwegian settlers) who sailed from Ålesund to become the first ruler of what is known today as Normandy, France.

NOTES

  • Comfortable shoes recommended.
  • Guests must be in good physical condition.
